Ship Masters – Ship Captain or a glorified Postman?
Captain of a ship….When one hears that . You imagine a person sitting on a high chair smoking a pipe and telling his mates of his adventures at sea.
If you talk about this to a corporate who understands shipping buisness , He would probably laugh, He knows (a non seafaring official) , Ship master is someone who receives their email and replies back…., Well complied. Meaning office is the boss.
But what he fails to understand is the dynamics of shipboard master’s job. The number of decision a ship master has to take take daily in his routine which makes a difference of life and death.
Employers who empower and train their masters to take decisions and resilience , win on a long run.
Ship Captains must remember that their position in law is seen as an independent commander who is not controlled by office and hence is completely responsible for his own action, orders from superintendent is not a ground for pleading not guilty.
